View Full Version : Wich order: RVM Integrator before nLite

Hate to open a topic for such a basic q. Used the search.
You might think, if you're gonna use nLite, why not use it to integrate as well? No need for RVM first (or after)!
Well, I have Dutch XP and I prefer using the Dutch updatepack from January since it contains QFE fixes (hasn't been updated since.. recent versions don't contain these fixes). The problem is: integrating this pack with the newest nLite version produces errors at T9 (nlite 1.0 and 1.0.1, no errors with beta 6 and before).
Since integration of this pack with RVM Integrator takes up the same time as an entire nLite session, I hope RVM can integrate it in such a way in will not produce errors. I will then use nLite for the Litening tasks (NOT to integrate other update/add-on packs.

So 2 questions: after doing some thinking it seems logical to run RVM BEFORE nLite. Is this correct? This way I could have 1 basic up-to-date CD and create different nLited versions.
2nd: I read warnings in old topics (january 2006) on RyanVM.net it could cause errors using RVM and nLite. Do they still count?

EDIT: 3rd q: why does it take a half hour to integrate the pack I mention while nLite can do the same in a few minutes? Is the method soo different (better/safer/more stable)?

Integrating the update pack takes time because of recompileing driver.cab. nLite takes the same amount of time to integrate an updatepack. For me it only takes about 8-10 mins. It takes longer in the most recent versions of the updatepack due to it having to compress files that are left uncompressed in the updatepack. If you use the integrator or nlite to do processes other than the updatepack then it is much faster. If nlite does this process any faster then something is wrong and that is why your disk is not working.

But yes RVM before nLite. Add before remove. Cause you can't remove something before it's been added.

OK thnx, one minor question: in nLite there is a checkbox (on the advanced tab) to remove Catalog files, should speed up Setup. Does RVM do this by default?
I have SFC always disabled.

There is no point in removing cat files... and no it would not speed anything up. The rmove cat option was used a long time ago when Ryans UpdatePack had too many hotfixes integrated... so removing the cat files served a purpose. But now there is no need for it... and it will actually cause problems with some drivers and things if you remove the cat files. The integrator used to have the option to remove the cats as well... but I recently took that option out of it because it is obsolete.

BTW... you would have better luck asking nLite questions in nLites forums at msfn.org.
