View Full Version : No Repair Install option

Got some new gear: case, power supply, motherboard, cpu, memory, video cards.

Opted to keep/reuse the hard drives, CD/DVD drives/burners, and floppy from previous system.

Had used RyanVM Integrator in the past so I waited till someone posted an Update Pack for December so I could make a new Integrated CD and use it to do a repair install.

Used RyanVM Integrator 1.5.4 beta 8.4, RED_XP_SP3_UpdatePack_12.08-02.7z, numerous addons, WMP11 Slipstreamer, and selected Driver Packs to update/integrate, make ISO, then burn a new CD on 11 Dec. All went fine.

Moved hardware into new case, set BIOS to boot from CD, and waited: boot was fine but I did not get an option to do a 'Repair" install. Bummer.

Dug out previously Integrated CD from 17 Sept 2008 and tried again; 'Repair' install was an option and things went fine, system restarted and XP pro started. Problem now was it was a bit out-of-date; but no big deal.

Main difference between the Integrated CDs was I had used RVMUpdatePackSP3_1.0.1.7z. The addons, WMP11 Slipstreamer, and Driver Packs were basically the same.

So, does anyone have an answer or know what I could check to see why the 'Repair' install was not an option using the latest CD? Is there a difference between the Update Packs that would remove this option? The source material was the same for both Integrations.

Thanks:(

try to see what has changed in the answer file relatively to the old ..
some answers in the Unattended section could cause the skip ...

Check in your source for \i386\winnt.sif (or possibly unattend.txt).
Winnt.sif is created when you integrate driverpacks (or use Nlite) and is used to create the 'answer file' used during XP setup.
The line you do not want is:
[Data]
UnattendedInstall="Yes"

OK - I copied what you stated above - will go back and check to see what it says.

Checked winnt.sif - no such entry under [Data]
Checked unattend.txt - no entry heading labelled [Data] but there is an entry labelled:
[Unattended]
Unattendmode = FullUnattended
OemPreinstall = NO
TargetPath = *
Filesystem = LeaveAlone

{Slaps head here}:(
While I was doing this I remembered something I was supposed to do after DriverPacks installation but before making the ISO - which I know now I forgot to do - the note to myself says:

WINNT.SIF - delete the following three lines after Driver Packs is run but before an ISO file is created.

[Unattended]
DriverSigningPolicy=Ignore
NonDriverSigningPolicy=Ignore

Could this ommision on my part caused the problem?

I will have to run a test, probably tomorrow, after I download the latest UpdatePack, RyanVM Post-SP3 Update Pack 1.0.2 which was just posted.

Thanks for you help (and the memory jog).

OK - I did solve the problem. The item I mentioned after my head slap did it - I did another Integration with UpdatePack 1.0.2 and edited winnt.sif as I had previously and this time I had a repair install option.

Oh well.
