Well.. I have been thinking about making a backup of the source code to PowerPacker for a while now.... and I didn't. :(

Yesterday I started hearing some knocking in the HD that had the source code on it. I went to access the drive and I was able to access it fine. So I decided to copy the powerpacker files to another drive... when all of a sudden the drive disapeared! Now if I power up the drive it spins really fast like it is gonna take off into outerspace for about 5 secs. Then it knocks about 10 times and stops spinning. The computer sees the drive but can not read anything. It is completley dead. :(

The good news is I was able to get ahold of the latest releases source code from RC8. ;) So it wasn't all lost. But everything I had for RC9 is gone. :(

That's ok though... cause I plan on making a lot of changes for RC9. Even the gui window may look a little different.

There were a few bugs in RC8 that I had allready fixed... but I guess I will have to fix them all over again. :(

I may fix all of the minor bugs in RC8 and quickly release an RC9. Then I may make the big changes in RC10.

Well... good news. I was able to salvage the RC8 source code and put it back together. :) I also fixed a few bugs (again) for RC9. I am gonna work on finishing up RC9 very soon and get a release out for everyone. ;)

Too bad you dont have a copy of Spinrite. It has saved a couple of drives for me under similar circumstances, at least long enough to get data off.

DDRESCUE to the... rescue!!!

I have used ddrescue to save my clients bacon on several occasions. All you need 2 drives (the bad and a new replacement of the same or larger size, ) and a copy of linux and ddrescue. (And a little patience) Follow this tutorial (http://www.debianadmin.com/recover-data-from-a-dead-hard-drive-using-ddrescue.html)for a brief how-to.

Cuz, I'm suprised. You really should know by now. NEVER just "Think" about backing up data. If you think about it, you know a hard drive is about to take a dive. I don't think about it any more. And if I do, I know I'd better kick in the SyncBack and backup my data. Nothing worse than drives going down with data you actually need. Course now I'm Raiding everything, no sense in taking a chance.

Glad to hear you were able to recover some data.
